WHAT IS TRICHOMONIASIS?

Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by a single-cell parasite. It affects both women and men, although symptoms are more common in women. It's the most common curable STD in young, sexually active women.

Symptoms may include
  • Itching, burning and soreness of the vagina and vulva (the area outside of the vagina)
  • Burning during urination
  • A greenish-yellow, sometimes frothy discharge
  • Elevated vaginal pH, above 5
The abnormal discharge that may occur with trichomoniasis differs in color and consistency from that experienced with bacterial vaginosis or vaginal yeast infections. For a side-by-side comparison, see our reference chart.
