WHAT IS BV?

Bacterial vaginosis is the most common vaginal infection in women of childbearing age (18-50)—twice as common as vaginal yeast infections. It's caused by an overgrowth of bacteria that are usually present in the vagina, upsetting the natural balance.

Symptoms may include:
  • A foul odor, often described as "fishy," that may be stronger
    after intercourse or your period
  • A grayish-white discharge
  • An elevated vaginal pH, above 5
BV symptoms differ from those of a yeast infection. The easiest way for women to differentiate BV from a yeast infection is the presence or lack of vaginal odor. BV infections typically produce an unpleasant, potentially embarrassing odor, while yeast infections are usually odor free. It is important to note that some women with BV may have no symptoms at all. For more on the difference between BV and vaginal yeast infections, see our reference chart.
